In the first episode Grace explains that she grew up in a small town in Texas and moved to California six years ago with the man she loved. They never got the chance to marry, but he gave her Lily. On Lily's birthday she buys her daughter fencing gloves, a gift Lily has wanted for so long, and tries to give them to her.
Things fall apart quickly. Lily is left outside in the rain as punishment for taking another child's gloves, which she says she did not do, and is burning up with a fever when Grace finds her. Grace tells her partner she dropped out of design school and worked double shifts in factories to support him and his family. When she takes Lily and leaves, she is told that walking out means cutting all ties, with no money and no help.
