This Cookie Policy explains how Runotoon uses cookies and similar technologies on https://runotoon.com (the “Service”), what they are for, and how you can control them. It is part of our Privacy Policy. If you have any questions, write to [email protected].
1. What cookies and similar technologies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device (computer, phone or other device) when you visit it, for example to keep you signed in or remember your language. Cookies set by the website you are visiting are first-party cookies; cookies set by another domain are third-party cookies. Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser; persistent cookies stay on your device until they expire or you delete them.
Local storage works like a cookie but can hold more data and is not sent to the server with each request. We use it to remember reader settings such as theme, font and text size, and our analytics provider uses it alongside its cookie.
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not use advertising pixels on the Service. If that changes, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
2. The cookies we use
Strictly necessary cookies
These are needed for the Service to work, for example to sign you in and to deliver referral rewards. They cannot be switched off in the Service. You can block them in your browser, but parts of the Service will then not work.
| Name | Purpose | Expires after |
|---|---|---|
runotoon.session_token (and other runotoon.* sign-in cookies) | Keeps you signed in and protects your session. | Until you sign out, up to 7 days, renewed while you use the Service |
ib_profile | Remembers which Runotoon profile your session belongs to. | 1 year |
ib_gate_next | Remembers the page to return to after you verify your email. | 1 hour |
rt_ref, rt_acq | Remember the invite code and campaign link you arrived with, so a referral reward reaches the right person when you sign up. | 30 days |
Functional cookies
These remember choices you make, such as your language, so you do not have to make them again. Without them, the Service still works but forgets those choices.
| Name | Purpose | Expires after |
|---|---|---|
rt-lang | Remembers the language of the site you chose. | 1 year |
rt-read-lang, rt-cc | Remember the language you read in and whether you turned subtitles off. | 1 year |
rt_ref_seen, rt_ref_hide | Remember that you closed the referral offer, so it is not shown again. | 30 days |
Analytics cookies
These help us understand how many people use the Service, which pages and titles are popular, and how readers move through it, so we can improve it. They are first-party cookies; the data they help collect is processed by us and by our analytics provider, PostHog, as described in the Privacy Policy.
| Name | Purpose | Expires after |
|---|---|---|
ib_visitor | An anonymous identifier for your browser, used to count visits and reading activity. | 2 years |
ph_<project key>_posthog | Set by PostHog, our analytics provider, to recognise your browser across visits and measure how the Service is used. | 1 year |
When you sign in with Google or Apple or pay through Polar, those providers may set their own cookies on their own pages. Their cookie policies apply to those cookies.
3. How to control cookies
Most browsers let you see, block and delete cookies and local storage, for all sites or for particular ones. The settings are usually under Privacy or Security in your browser’s settings; see the help pages of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge or Opera, or https://www.aboutcookies.org/how-to-control-cookies/. If you block all cookies, you will not be able to sign in or use every feature of the Service.
You can also stop most analytics by using your browser’s tracking protection or a content blocker, or by asking us at [email protected] to stop processing your analytics data.
4. Changes to this policy
We may change this Cookie Policy from time to time, for example when we add or remove a cookie. We show each change by updating the “Last updated” date above.
